Oh well there is still this site as well as Pro Football Reference and other sites for other leagues:

yea i won’t be installing any who is online thing. generally, you can see who is online recently by their profile.

what other info do you want? there is info here About - Canadian Football Fan Forum on the right hand side of the page

no other, just the who is online. It is ok tho, we didnt have that info for the last 1 or 2 reincarnations on cfl.ca

it’s actually pointless information considering a forum is asynchronous discussion by design. who is online status is really only relevant for synchronous (real-time) chat apps.

I just love pointless info

How naive they were in those days, for this feature simply degraded into use by chiefly trolls. Hardly anybody else cared.

Whoever is here, is here. Whoever is not, they’ll read your message later. That’s not changed either.

BTW, I had no intent to ask it be installed here. Just being nostalgic

one of the problems with the who is online thing is that it is resource heavy because it is constantly querying the server for updated stats for each user. it’s not as straightforward as it sounds because users can opt out of it too.

as a side note. Back on the old fan huddle, two of us discovered that we had both played on the same winnipeg touch football team, at different times.

for example, it is possible to setup a who’s online thing, but it affects forum performance. it would mean i would likely have to upgrade the CPU and RAM on the server (more $$). so our busiest times are during big games - the last thing we would want is for the forum to be conking out on labour day weekend rivalry game threads…

it uses MessageBus real-time updates, and this is creates a heavy load when traffic is high.

Also, there are other social implications. having who is online can enable user interaction that is otherwise unwanted.
