You look at the roster of Canadians we plan to start and they are almost all people we drafted. Apart from Lawrence and Berglund, the rest are our draft picks. I love seeing that investment.

3 years contract is certainly a big investment in him

Jonathan Sutherland: “Danny Maciocia and I have always been in constant communication since he drafted me that if things didn’t work out in the NFL…I had a place to play in Montreal.”

JS on position he’d like to play in CFL: “I’d like to go into it with an open mind & sit down talk with the coaches. Obviously, it’s a new game so just to see schematically what makes sense. I know I’m capable of playing wherever they need me.”

Isn’t that the standard entry-level contract for Canadians?

Yes that’s what I learn

Standard contract for National rookies.

Year 1 and 2.

Base salary + possible max. bonus of $15,000.

Year 3.

Base salary +10% + max. bonus of $15,000.

Unless there have been recent changes in National rookie contract, the max. salary for Jonathan Sutherland could be:

2026:

Base salary of $70,000 + max. bonus/incentives of $15,000. Total $85,000.

2027:

Base salary of $75,000 -the base salary will increase by $5,000. in 2027- + bonus/incentives of $15,000. Total $90,000.

2028:

Base salary of $75,000 + a max. of 10% or $7,500. to $82,500 + bonus/ incentives of $15,000. Total $97,500.

I don’t know if marketing money can be added to the National rookie contract.

I find it unfortunate and even unjust that there are no limits in base salary that an American rookie can receive while it is presently $70,000. for a National rookie.

Americans don’t have roster spots specifically designated for them as Americans. They tend to be cut faster as a result. That’s not even accounting for the fact that moving to another country to get paid in dollars that don’t hold to your own country’s currency is a financial drain.

Americans also have options. They can play in the spring leagues.

A couple of stories on Cantin-Arku’s off-season workout routine, including spending some time with Tyrell Richards.

I could well be wrong, but I don’t think Dequoy will be back. We’re into late January and the needle hasn’t moved. Evidently he’s taking a long time to weigh his options. And that’s as it should be. But if he expects the team to budge on the Dec. 12 offer, particularly now that we have added another quality Canadian defensive back in Sutherland, I think he’s in for a surprise.

Frequently, I look to see how Danny, Jason & co. are evaluating performances from the previous year, and whether their assessment lines up with my own perceptions as a fan. It pleases me that for the most part, their evaluations have been on the money and consonant with a lot of our impressions on this forum.

In 2023, we agreed that our pass rush needed improvement, as did our MLB position. We brought in Lemon and Sankey and the rest is history.

After 2024, we wanted a change at QB and we thought DA was ready. The team agreed, traded Cody away, and was clearly proven right in that decision.

After 2025, everyone agreed that Dequoy didn’t have a stellar season, and the team saw it too. Hence the current standoff with Dequoy’s contract.

Time will tell with the GCA decision (releasing Sankey), but it is a bold move and at minimum, it shows that the team understands GCA’s current and potential value.

And hey, there are also times when the team sees something we don’t and they turn out to be justified. I was pretty dubious about bringing Lorenzo Burns back after 2024, but I’m happy that he proved me wrong with an excellent 2025.
