If all goes according to plan @bomberjunkie NEXT season Bryce Perkins will morph into the arm we need at #2 while Taylor Elgersma will finally parachute into Winnipeg in the nick of time to become Zach’s heir apparent for 2027.
(I asked Santa if he could make it happen and he gave me two thumbs up)
As the honourable opposition and a guest here, I am concerned about this plan, and well for you all that would be a good thing!
Late last season, when Sean “Spitshine” Mahoney cracked the roster to be the third quarterback for the first time in his pro football career, on the depth chart after “Can’t Throw” as you shared with us at the old place, well even though it was a game with low meaning, the crew did not understand any such ramifications and had thought your good ship Bombers had lost its way.
It took me almost two weeks to calm them down after busting ass to keep them on track for their daily chores so we could sail smoothly on the high seas.
Remember what the Bombers did for one of our most durable defensive fixtures, Jake Thomas just two weeks ago?
Jake was at that awkward age (somewhere between ‘old’ and ‘death’) so HC Mike O’Shea had a decision to make going into this off season. Luckily for Thomas our 2025 DL coach Darrell Patterson was retiring so O’Shea did the right thing by offering our elderly iron man the job… which he and his wife gladly accepted.
Celebrations were in order and many goats were slaughtered for the obligatory feast that followed where I drank too much mead. Sorry if I ruined anyone’s meal by running naked across the table. THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS.
Anyway, fast forward to today and it looks like Saskatchewan has followed our lead:
Good report, Friar Maax. Also appears Bombers have cut ties with long-time centre Chris Kolankowski. But they haven’t given him a job as snap coach - yet!
Kolankowski, much like Old Jake Thomas was a durable but vastly under-powered Canadian o-lineman. Opposition defenses had Kolankowski on roller skates much of his career - such was the power and strength deficit. But Mike O’Shea, the Loyalty King has to answer for this “crime”.
Now we have some serious gaps in our once mighty OL. Unless we’re planning to air drop three new and improved road graders into our front five we’ll start next season with the weakest offensive line in the CFL.
It’s getting scary. Zach’s gonna be running for his life back there.
Meanwhile the Cats have taken another FA OL off the open market that would’ve improved our sagging sad sacks. Is it too late to change the rules for rushing the quarterback to five steamboats?
Old Zach-Man was already running for his life. If he didn’t have $650,000 worth of Bomber bounty to collect he’d be running for the hills. Zach will collect his money - whether the Bombers choose to protect him - or not.
Imo the Bombers O-line is and has been in need of an update or overhaul for a couple years. I think Kola was getting manhandled on many snaps so a change there isn’t a surprise. I think they could see if Eli can handle it or their recent draft pick Vibert who i think i read somewhere plays center. There could also be a free agent available, we’ll see as the off season progresses.
Pretty much end of the line for KolaKola - don’t think any of the other 8 be interested in a guy who tends to serve up his own QB frequently. Might get a year as a roster back-up due to his experience and being a loyal, O’Shea-trained team guy. Thats much better than not playing, period. If no one scoops him up from the discard pile - I can see the Bombers offering him a relatively low paying job in their front office.
Casey Sayles is certainly not an earth-mover but could he be any worse than some of the under=powered “street toughs” pretending to be Bomber d-linemen? Again, depends on the $$$ ask, if its $100k to $120k with a $12k signing bonus perhaps doable. Kyle Walters has to get some meat on da bone - Sayles might be a 3 to 4 sack guy (season) but he’s decent. Old Jake was pretty much only good at being Old Rude Jake.
Obviously a financial consideration. Sayles will play things out, sniffing for another plump contract. If he doesn’t get close to his existing contract, the Bombers may have a chance to sign the guy for a downgraded amount.
PS. The only team I can think that will come close to existing Sayles contract is Ottawa.
PS2: The more I think about it the more I believe Sayles will be a Redblack by Jan 25 at latest. Ryan Dinwiddie, who bolted the Argos is a desperate head coach & GM. He’ll sign Sayles for at least $5,000 more than the stingy Bombers are willing to pay. Heck, Dinwiddie even fished 69 yr old Playboy Jeff Reinbold out of the Hawaii Sewage System to be his special teams coach.
Canadian receiver Gavin Cobb extends his contract for another year. He had very limited action last season but fills out a depth role at the very least.
