CFL Council of Geezers / Old Rules Discussion and Old Gripes

I’ve heard it is back already!

I was merely an Auxiliary Member, sometimes fetching strong drinks, often sipping before serving them, in the last days of the Council of Geezers at the old place.

Anyway, for those of you with old ideas for the CFL and the rules, THIS is probably a great place for you, though we welcome all with an appreciation for the history of gridiron, not that we have to stay frozen in some of it.

Here you go, for old rants that you don’t want to let die, this is a great place for you too, as opposed to team rooms for non-fans of any given team. Enjoy!

For others only now reading, Happy Festivus for those celebrating as well these days, for you are also in the right place here now and also here:

We now honour and respect any sacred time used in these very cold days for the Airing of Grievances.

Not one of my personal grievances but I can imagine Winnipeg fans not being happy with the no yards penalty at the end of the 1972 playoff game vs the Roughriders

That was the first CFL game I recall watching as a young lad. I believe that was #29 Paul Williams kicking the ball out of the end zone for the Bombers.

I was completely bewildered as to why Saskatchewan won the game on a missed field goal attempt and no one could explain the logic behind this carnival like play to me that cost the Bombers their season. Failure to make the field goal clearly was rewarded. As a result I have never been a fan of the rouge and note that kicking the ball out of the end zone never works because of the no yards penalty it is sure to attract.

We go now live to hidden surveillance in the Mod House?:

“Oh well, let’s see what kind of heavy gear we can find for ‘him’ in the Mod Barn for after we track him down. Given this old evidence at our hands only today, he’ll pay dearly for his historic misdeeds.”

Also I see that you are celebrating Festivus with your post, so Happy Festivus, for you are clearly participating in the honourable Airing of Grievances portion of the festival.

Hate that they don’t publish the reasons for players being on the roster’s suspended list. Can these guys still play outside of Canada? Pro or school if qualified?

Depends on the real reason. Sometimes they put them on there to hide players. If it’s done just to bend the rules the player is staying put. If he did something wrong and isn’t coming back smaller leagues would take him.

Thanks. Haven’t seen a Rider player play again for the team although haven’t really been playing attention to that until lately. Noticed that the list seems to be filled primarily in training camp. Discipline, home sick and PEDs are my go to suspicions as to why a player might jump ship early.

Yeah I can only point to Josh Woods from last year on June 6, 2025 for the Lions. He was added to the suspended list while he was recovering from injury. I have to think putting him on there was a salary cap move. He obviously later came back.

First one i’m sort of sure about is an O lineman. A guy on D hit one of our QBs in practice. He took exception and a fight ensued. Problem was that Mace was beaking t these guys for a while about discipline. He tossed both out of practice. Suspect more happened or was said off the field because he was permanently suspended afterwards. I thought defending the QB was a good move but maybe it never ended there?

The failure to increase roster size while and at the same time requiring say 3 QBs (which is really 4 because you need a fourth if someone gets hurt.) has made juggling injuries etc more difficult. In effect it eats up roster positions and injury positions for “must haves” It seems silly that for every redundant person they didn’t add a roster spot.
