Brown and Arbuckle yes, Maier no.
This is fair too. He hasnāt looked good in a long time.
And people say the Toronto fans donāt careā¦.
Iām sorry but it sounds like a bunch of exaggerated over the top bull crap to me . Ask yourself this questionā¦..why would anybody give a flying puck about an absolute nobody in a city where absolutely nobody gives a flying woop about the team in general anyways ? Iām sorry but we are talking about a 2nd /3rd string QB here . It would be like our Jake Dolegala claiming he got death threats because he missed a 3rd down short yardage gamble FFS.
I tend to concur.
Calling Dukes a 2nd/3rd string QB is generous to him.
Montreal this past season had all 3 of their QBs go down, Alexander, MBT, and Caleb Evans.
So #4 took over, one James Morgan, and he was dreadful.
So they went out in mid season and signed 2 available QBs that no one had bothered to pick up, Shea Patterson and the aforesaid Dukes. They kept Patterson and released Dukes.
So last season Dukes was a 6th string QB.
TouchƩ !
290-300k a year, 3 year deal.
It was probably one specific unhinged fan that decided to give Dukes an ultimatum. If Dukes has the screenshots, then itās likely true.
Donāt forget, this type of harassment of CFL players has happened many times over the years.
Hamilton fans threw bricks at Tom Clementsā front living room window back around 1982. Then Rider fans dumped a truckload of manure on Paul McCallumās lawn.
However, this kind of behaviour in no way represents an entire fanbase.
Like it was actually gonna be any other team. ![]()
I wouldnāt have put him in the washed up pile even when he was in Edmonton. Heās been a part of a few very bad teams; Edmonton then his first year in Montreal if I bet correctly. Behind the same line and with the same recievers Iād take Harris over Arbuckle, brown or Maier any day.
Thatās a lot of cake to have wrapped up in a RB. He is the best RB in the league, and Canadian, but that puts your QB1 and RB1 at over $900,000 per year.
I wouldnāt either, but you donāt play for 6 teams in this league without your stock dropping and the perception that you arenāt a franchise QB. He left Edmonton at his lowest point, came to Montreal to replace Vernon Adams, had one OK-ish 3/4 of a season in which he got obliterated in the playoffs (2022 ESF loss to Hamilton and he played poorly), then jumped to SK and spent most of 2023 injured. It was only in 2024 when Mace came in and the team solidified that he started to look better.
So just about everyone is going to look poor if the team isnāt there around him. The last two Grey Cup QBs are Harris and Nick Arbuckle, who was close to retirement until Toronto came calling.
That fact says a lot about the CFL.
NFL is a QB league
CFL is defense, special teams and QBs
Actually, itās the last four Cups: Harris, Arbuckle, Fajardo, MBT
Harris had to wait a long time and play on some bad teams to get his first ring. The other three arenāt exactly elite.
Actually as a Ti-Cat fan, looking at that list is making me have to reach for a Gravol.
Harris is in a class way above Arbuckle though. Heās an elite QB but on his own he wouldnāt carry a team. But no one would beyond a game or two.
And if you go to the back to back wins with Collaros in 2019 and 2021; he was on an elite team. He didnāt play that well in Sask in 2017-2018.
Absolutely not denying that Harris is a substantially better QB than Arbuckle. Just saying that you need a whole team for any QB, no matter how good they are. And yeah, an elite QB might be able to squeeze out a few wins here and there, but that would have its limits, as you pointed out.
