New CFL rules discussion

Provided the receiving team is within 5 yards of the ball and they don’t touch it, wouldn’t the kicking team get called for no yards?

Not if the players touching the ball were onside

When the NFL season is on I watch seven or eight games every Sunday. During the CFL season I will watch all four games every week. Because I have a rooting interest in the Argos I prefer the CFL.

In my observation both game day experiences are about the same. The NFL seems more polished. The CFL has the odd quirky thing happen that makes you shake your head and makes it appear less polished. I would rather they get rid of all the quirkiness if only to seem more professional. Things like the ass fumble out of bound that @Jon has mentioned numerous times. Some crazy scramble in and out of the end zone to prevent a Rouge. Although it gets publicity, people really are laughing at us when they see it. It’s an easy thing to criticize and it’s easy to conclude from that that our league is not worth watching, rightly or wrongly.

I suspect polishing up our game will go a long way towards gaining new fans. In a way, the new rules don’t make our game better they just make our game less bad.

I would rather just see good quality play and good quality football decisions made by good quality coaches. That doesn’t necessarily mean going for it more on 3rd and short but when they do I want there to be some good creative play calling.

All these scenarios you guys are mentioning might suggest that the new rules will lead to some more interesting plays.

Oh dear then we can watch things get really corny, especially when the dribble kick going out of bounds becomes a random ass-fumble recovery, whether or not by some ass otherwise!

They are 4dn fans and making our rules the same as theirs won’t change them. They’ll just revert to calling our league second class for various reasons. Whatever it takes to promote their self image as being superior. Sadly, the more we make our rules the same as theirs the more inferior we become.

The option has always been there to line up a couple onside players and sky a punt. They normally only attempt that sort of recovery when they are kicking into a strong wind. Taking away the shorter FGs just makes it a more viable option.

I agree with the first part regarding the “elitist” thinking of some fans. Years ago I believe it was Ambrosie who said that he wasn’t trying to attract all American football fans to the CFL. He was just trying to get 1% of them. 99% of American football fans won’t give the league a chance due to the rules. The CFL is going after the people that flip through the channels, find their game by accident and watch it because it’s better than watching baseball and it’s live action.

To me the inferior vs superior argument doesn’t matter when it comes to the rules. The rules don’t determine if it’s a better product or not. I support the CFL because it’s local. If the teams were in Europe with the same set of rules I wouldn’t watch or buy the merch.

Sadly the local argument does’t fly with local 4dn fans. Their superior interests are what matters. Make our rules the same as 4dns and we become UFL version whatever and completely irrelevent. Perhaps that’s the point?

There are many Canadians including members of this board that refuse to watch the NFL citing rules, that it’s boring, or that there’s 6-3 games (like less than 1% of the time).

I appreciate the NFL isn’t trying to attract these people but the superiority complex of some CFL fans to beat down the NFL giant is also very prevalent.

“The NFL only has more fans because of its marketing". Many people view it as a better game and they have good reasons for it.

Never understood why more people on both sides just don’t like both. I watch all football leagues because I love football.

lol @ the irony of cfl fans calling nfl fans elitist. i love both nfl and cfl, and other than pats vs broncos, some of the most exciting football of any kind i have seen in my life has been played in the last few weeks.

Actually agree with nearly everything you’ve said but…I get fricken tired of hearing local 4dn fans saying “you’ll never see plays like that in the CFL” That is the superiority complex that i refer to.

PS: they say that crap when they don’t know that they are talking to a CFL fan. They aren’t doing it to rub it in my face.

We don’t have that issue in BC. We mostly stick to talking about the weather and about food. Perhaps that says more about the people I socialize with on a day to day basis. The odd time food and weather gets talked about at the same time

I’m talking about CFL fans doing it.

I think a lot of CFL fans remember another era of the NFL where the game progressed incredibly slowly to the point it was unbearable to watch. I would land in that category in the early-mid 90s.

Regardless, I don’t have the personal bandwidth to follow more sports at the moment without a sacrifice in daily upkeep.

i’m still shaking from watching that bears - packers game in the wildcard round. holy crap.

so much good football in the NFL playoffs this year

last week’s rams vs seahawks was an unreal display of exceptionally executed football.

You probably spend more time following hockey than i do. i like hockey, but i don’t spend much time watching or following it, other than a few highlights and playoff games. even during football offseasons, i spend more time following football than other sports.

And even before for the Packers at Bears a few weeks before during the regular season for that rivalry! There were quite a few playoff games before the playoffs in the final two weeks!

It’s been a great season, and one of the few detractors has been overemphasis by the media on Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, and to some degree also Josh Allen though he’s for real but the hype has been way over-the-top.

That NFC Championship was the Super Bowl already.

I think there may be hardcore NFL fans who would never consider the CFL even if the rules were perfect and the game was entertaining. But I do think there are more casual fans that would give the CFL a try if they presented it correctly.
