The CFL Expands to the USA - Canadian Football History

Happy New Year! I used to post my new articles on the old CFL forums. Hope I can do the same here.

Kicking off the year with a trip down memory lane from 30 years ago to when the CFL U.S expansion experiment ended. Fun times.

That was an interesting read with some familiar names such as Lonie Glieberman and John Candy (RIP).

Some questions I’m asking after reading about this expansion.

  • If expansion fees were $5M back in 1992, what would an expansion fee in 2026 look like? Closer to $15-20M?
  • How in the world did they justify splitting up Calgary and Edmonton in setting up divisions?

I’m glad that Nick Mileti didn’t end up successfully scooping one of the community-based teams. Also, the link to the “CFL Forums” needs to be changed. Lastly, I’ve never heard of the Fediverse…I have a feeling that most social media savvy people (young’ens) haven’t either.

I remember what the other point I was going to make on the article!

Larry Smith is cited as saying,

“No matter what happens, top Canadians will play…The improvement of the university game in Canada is one reason…We’re going to support those programs.”

I hope that the CFL does make a choice to once again support USports in a way that makes the Vanier Cup relevant again.

CBC’s Morgan Campbell threw out an opinion piece saying that USports has to be more visible to generate interest in the league. The CFL really need to support USports and negotiating them into the next TV deal would be one way of doing it.
