Welcome to the new forum

As some of you have already noted, a big thanks goes out to @gridirongirl getting the new forum up and running so quickly. And an assist goes to @BetweenTheGoalposts

I see some of you are making suggestions and asking questions, which is fine, but please have some patience as it will take some time to get everything fully up and running and get all the details in place

We were notified by the league in about May that they were shutting the forum down almost immediately. We pleaded with them not to. We never received a reply, but the forum stayed up and running until now, when the annual fee became due. We never heard from them again until today and since about the start of 2023 the league has had no one involved with the forum and has done some questionable things like burying the forum link. All of our pleas to the CFL went unanswered. They have had nothing to do with the forum for some time other than the automatic posting of articles from their website which will obviously no longer occur. So I expect there will be little change from the previous forum as that was all crafted by the admins and moderators.

We think the CFL made a big mistake in ditching the forum. The publicity they got from that forum was a bargain- almost free. The way they went about all of this was unprofessional and I think I can safely say that the way the CFL operates is bush league.

In preparation for the forum being closed we had discussions about starting this forum and GGirl did whatever prep work was necessary so fortunately we have this up and running immediately in spite of receiving no notice from the bush league.

Hopefully almost all of the active participants from the old forum will transition over to this one. I am looking forward to carrying on with this forum in a similar fashion fashion to the previous one. Enjoy!

btw you can customize the category list in your sidebar by clicking the pencil icon in it’s header:

then you will get a popup window allowing you to select or deselect and save which ones you want there.

League and team logo icons are now used for their specific sub-forums (instead of those colored squares).

This whole shutting down a 20+ year online community with no notice thing probably deserves at least a write-up on 3downnation.com or something.

Its quite ludicrous that it was shut down on a day’s notice. It was not the world’s most active forum but probably had the most in-depth discussions of CFL topics on the internet.

(replies still limited per day via the default settings, one of many fine works in progress)

In regards to your last comment, there was more of “cost-cutting” than ever since perhaps the Great Recession in 2025, which is now automated and brought to you more easily by AI.

See also “mass playoffs” and “stealth layoffs.”

I experienced the latter in November, but I found my new place already that is better, but I feel for those who have not yet through no fault of their own after solid work performance.

Let’s support all whom we can in those shoes suddenly now, especially now at an awful time just in time for the holidays and winter.

I would not put it past the CFL, like most modern businesses, to have used technology to identify “cost savings,” damn the costs for which they do not account, as elaborated by @BetweenTheGoalposts on the now former forum, which I will copy here for reference:

This is an urgent and final notice to all members of the CFL Forums.

I’m sure many of you have seen the banner I added to the site. Earlier this year, the league informed us that they would be discontinuing the CFL Forums and transitioning fans toward the CFL subreddit. Despite our efforts to advocate for this community, including a detailed response highlighting the forum’s 20+ year history, engagement numbers, and unique value, we did not receive a reply, and the shutdown process has begun at the hosting level.

The forum is scheduled to go offline tonight, December 12.

We wanted to ensure every member has a chance to:

  • Save personal posts or long-form threads

  • Back up private messages

  • Archive anything of sentimental or historical importance

  • Connect with other users before the shutdown

This place has been home to decades of discussion, memories, debates, predictions, arguments, inside jokes, and friendships. It has outlasted countless platforms and survived solely because of this community’s passion. That has always been the heart of the CFL Forums.

We know this news is disappointing, and we wish the league had provided more transparency and time. But while the platform is ending, the community doesn’t have to.

@GridironGirl has created a brand-new site for us to continue on;

https://discourse.cfl.forum/

Please feel free to register and keep the community going in a new place.

Thank you all for being part of something truly special.

I just sent them an email with the tip.

If the CFL wanted to transition us properly, I imagine that would involve some sort of engagement with fans which didn’t happen.

This is more like playing “Closing Time” and turning off all the lights at the end of the night in a bar.

Hey wait a minute! Here I and others were thinking that the burying of the forum gate was a new feature, known later as the Secret Garden, as a prudent barrier to entry to the exclusive club!

Some of us liked the Secret Garden!

Anyway, I also like how now we can hear more about what was behind that curtain.

I suspect we’ll also be playing here faster and looser, yet still like for contests, we’ll be playing by strict rules.
