:als_red: Alouettes 2026 Talk

I don’t really see the panic

Sankey –> Arkou = Ratio +1

Dylan wynn = Zero impact

Shawn Lemon = Zero Impact

McGloster = Zero impact

Desquoy = Beauchemin, Sutherland and others, substantial salary saving.

MACK → Sterns = Money savings + Upside

Letcher –> Deadmon = wash

MBT –> Crumm = Upside and Savings.

Maciocia clearly, looking to diminish the games lost to injury, make team younger and more physical. No question lots of work to do but he’s very meticulous. He’s earned my trust.

I’m not quite as optimistic as you. Mack to Sterns is a huge downgrade in quality even if it saves against the cap. Dedmon is 100% not an upgrade on Letcher, given that he’s older and incapable of playing anything close to a full season (injury). You also missed Oakman’s release, which combined with Wynn, leaves some big question marks in the interior of our line.

But I agree with you in the other cases. I actually think we’ll be stronger at safety this year.

Second that.

It isn’t all a catastrophe, as we do sometimes get very myopic as fans. That said, until proven otherwise we are weaker at receiver and even more so at DL. Does DM have a plan? I’m sure he does but I am not seeing it yet and our recruiting is hit and miss. Remember also that Mack, stepping in and excelling in his rookie season was the exception, not the rule.

I will say this: there are some interesting prospects from the new American talent pool, so hopefully someone breaks out at DT this year the way Moose did in 2022.

At receiver, I too am not seeing the plan, but Maciocia has done enough good work that I’ll reserve judgment until training camp. I still think cutting Mack is a mistake that will cost us, but I’m hoping that something great happens, like Gaillardetz or Harris taking a big step forward, Gittens Jr. signing with us, some draft surprise, or a guy like Hollins regaining his old BC form.

Still waiting for the Als to announce their 2026 coaching staff. And quite surprised that no reporter in Montreal has asked about this issue.

The CFL draft and American rookies at camp will hopefully improve the team. But that’s down the road.

Right now we are at free agency. One of the things Maciocia had mentioned was improving depth. You shouldn’t have to build your team in free agency, but be selective in filling holes. Maciocia has done that in the past.

Crum is an improvement over MBT, but Sterns is really an unknown, and on the surface not equal to Mack. I think Dedmon will be an improvement over Letcher. Injuries are a random thing, and Letcher himself was injured last season.

But we still needed to fill holes at National WR and at DT. Gittens Jr. is still a possibility but I’m not holding out hope. And I’m not sure what quality is still available at DT.

So I think we all expected more from Maciocia in free agency, but so far it has not been overwhelming.

Gittens hasn’t produced enough like Philpot or Emilus to be in their salary range. He needs to regain his Toronto form first before a big pay day. That could be why he hasn’t signed with anyone yet. Expectations vs reality.

All I can about Mack to Sterns is Post hoc ergo propter hoc … I don’t think we can assume he was signed to replace Mack … just because one thing happened doesn’t mean the next happened because of it

I don’t think anyone seriously thinks the team views Sterns as a straight-up replacement for Mack, but it’s only natural to compare a departed receiver with a newly arrived receiver. In aggregate, we are weaker at receiver right now than we were in 2025.

FWIW, former Director of Football Operations Allyson Sobol is no longer on the team’s website.

Similar football ops cap victim as Deslauriers was last year?

While there is no panic, presently the Alouettes is a weaker team that the one in 2025; as has been written by others, the main concerns are receivers, particularly National, and A defensive linemen.

Now, to be glass half full for a moment, let’s compare 2026 so far with the start of 2025. (comparing starts of years)

QB: Assuming DA is at 100% and we have a QB3 not named James Morgan, we are stronger with Crum replacing MBT.

RB: Definitely stronger, with Scott backed up by Theis an upgrade on a broken-down STE starting.

O-line: Stronger, with Shanks replacing McGloster and now with a year of experience under his belt.

Receiver: Weaker until proven otherwise.

DE: Even. Maybe slightly stronger because we’re not starting the year off with Archibald injured, but a wash overall.

DT: Weaker. No Wynn and Oakman, and no proven replacements for them (yet).

LB: Tough to assess. We’ll call it even. Sankey’s loss will be felt, but I think GCA can be productive at mike, and passport gives us ratio flexibility, to say nothing of guys like Sutherland and Richards who can fill the jack linebacker role.

DB: Stronger IF we fill the field half position. Hamlin/Beauchemin will be as good or better than Dequoy. Burns, Ento, and Sutton are all back. We do need good depth.

Kick return: Weaker unless Dedmon magically stays healthy, something he has never shown the ability to do.

Kicking: Same.

There’s one DT still out there as a free agent - Anthony Lanier. Yes, he’ll be 33, but he graded out far better than Wynn and had a 72.0 pass rush grade which is quite good.

He might be a veteran stop gap while a younger player develops.
