Ex TiCat Matt Shiltz retires
His two most productive seasons came with the Ticats in 2022 and 2023, where he split reps under centre and rotated in for certain packages.

Great read!
Remember when Durant signed with the Bombers, took a signing bonus and then retired?
Classy guy that Darian was .
āThat guyā got cut from Montreal before being paid $150k bonus. No one made a big deal about that. Took a new contract with a signing bonus and months later decided to retire. So what if it cost a team $70k that shit happens to players all the time. It probably wouldnāt have been a story if it was an ex rider qb and Winnipeg.
Did you know the league talked to him about his decision? They actually supported a team over a player and suggest he pay the money back without acknowledging what Montreal did.
Two completely different things.
Players specifically ask for those signing bonuses prior to the season to give them security and not getting cut during camp.
Teams cutting those players early (like Tre Ford) allow them the advantage and jump on free agency.
In Durantās case he took the signing bonus commiting to the following season and then left.
Players typically do get the shaft from the CBA but the two examples arenāt comparable.
The article is hilarious though. Itās like he didnāt know they were having a kid. If only there was a way for him to get like 9 months notice.
Well there is a lot of other articles you could look up. He said after haveing their child (first one) and leaving for training camp and being gone for three weeks he realized he didnāt want to be away from his family. Thatās a righteous decision. He sacrificed his career to be with his family. The team that ditched him left him with 150k less than he should have and the league supported that decision. So they should support his decision. Both were within the contract. Each side took their risks.
Players retire after signing co tracts regularly. Itās difficult for teams. Sometimes theyāve received up front money and other times they havenāt. Too bad for the team. Your excuse that letting a player go before a bonus is like trying to find a positive in a negative situation. That player signed that contract for less money because they were to get an off season bonus but they didnāt get it. They got paid less to play for the year. Just like that team got nothing for a portion of his yearly salary. Thatās the business of football. How many players do you think would say āhey thanks for cutting me before the bonus we contracted, that was very honourable of youā
Thatās exactly what Iām doing.
The CFL doesnāt have many guaranteed contracts. The players negotiate these bonuses to know where they stand ahead of time.
The team has to make a decision in January vs May.
Same point Iām making but other side of the equation. The contracts arenāt guaranteed for players, or in this case, the team. The bright side is it open up money for Winnipeg to spend elsewhere (Strevelor, Jefferson, Collaros). You could say first almost single handedly handed them their dynasty!
Itās cute that you think things are equal between the players and owners.
I donāt blame you for defending a Rider, but the move was pretty bad.
Things clearly are not equal. Either way Durant was treated within Montreals contract rights and so was Winnipeg. If it had been a non rider youād likely see it differently. Iāll leave it at that as anything else Iād say about your rider comments in general probably should not be said in the ticats forum.
Obviously Winnipeg fans will feel differently about what Durant did, and thatās fine, but as someone with no skin in the game, I have zero problem with Durant taking the bonus and then retiring. Players get shafted by teams all the time. All the time. Treated like horseflesh and cut the second itās optimal for the team (frequently right before a bonus is due). So if youāre a player, you have to put yourself first. Aināt no one else gonna do it for you.
Would I like it if Durant had done that to my team? Sure, I wouldnāt be happy, but ethically Iād have no legit reason to be outraged. Football players have so few guarantees and forms of leverage. Withholding labour in the form of retirement is one piece of actual leverage.
Davis Alexander has thrown six interceptions in his first three seasons for Montreal, which has included 11 starts.

He needs one more to equal the seven picks thrown by Manziel in 11 games in 2018.#CFL #AlsMTL #Alouettes https://t.co/ewnDkaJv9f
Thatās a very weird, and non-consequential, fact.
Exactly what I was thinking!
