Free Agency 2026

Bridges, Avery , Gittens = a killer roster.

My #1 was McManis,

Let’s get these three and dominate the season.

Seems to be a bit of a pattern emerging with a lot of ex-Cats ending up in Edmonton. No doubt because of Hervey’s familiarity with these players from his tenure here as GM.

Not really a new tactic though. Burke did that up in Ottawa a few years ago, but it didn’t really turn out that well for them. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

And Ted did it for us last season.

Maybe it’s because they enjoy playing in a cavernous near empty outdated old stadium with no one in the stands watching them ? Could also be it’s because they never make the playoffs thus giving them an extra three weeks of vacation time each year .

I think it is to hang out with Hervey, such an amazing man….just ask him

Yup .

it‘s that warm , fuzzy personality of his that endears him to people .

No doubt that we’ve also benefitted from former Execs raiding their old teams. If I recall, we signed a few ex-Argos around the time that Jim Barker was here with us in his consulting/assistant coach role.

As others have mentioned already, what exactly is the appeal of going to Edmonton right now? Elks have struggled for years, and Hervey hasn’t exactly been known as a GM that develops a good rapport with his players. We know this because there’s enough stories out there about that.

Money. That’s the appeal for many, if not most CFL players.

We only have 4 of our own players left that are currently un-signed in Bridges , Burke , Hoyte and Woods . The only one that I hope we sign out of the 4 is Bridges . The other 3 are all basically spare parts and easily replaceable .

We signed a punter: Hamilton Tiger-Cats sign former first overall CFL Global Draft pick Fraser Masin - 3DownNation

I agree that money is the motivating factor. However, some players might consider other factors as well such as teammates, geographical location, team facilities and culture. Especially if the pay increase is not particularly substantial.

One has to wonder how many hometown discounts a player of Simoni’s calibre took over the years to stay in Hamilton.

Yeah, it’s Free Agency but they seemed to have taken all the excitement out of it now with all the Tampering Window signings.

At this point, all of the best fruit has been picked over and mostly what’s left is some of the marginal players.

Teams need those players for both backups and ST assignments.

But I agree with your first point.

It’s kind of like going to an All you can Eat buffet a half hour before the place is closing and basically everything has already been picked over .
