New CFL rules discussion

Meh, I say we hold those bojacks to new rules, and of course, strict rules.

Mr Goldfinger appreciates strict rules. If anyone tries to bring a Slazenger 7 out, we strike. I of course prefer to play a Penfold Heart.

Well back in the day I was against the forward pass and cutting the end zones from 25 to 20 yards. Going from 5 points to 6 for a touchdown. But being an old geezer I forget what else I was against. Maybe it was when they stopped using the flying wing. lol

The area between the hashmarks is only 15% of the width and is more congested with bodies. It shouldn’t shock anybody that there are fewer completions there. Throw to the edges and you have much more room to complete a pass.

Field position matters. Blows me away that people think teams will stop punting and go for it on 3rd all the time. Every punter in the league is capable of punting it 20 rows up OB from the 35 yard line and they will all put it inside the 10. Surprised they punt at all down south when they are past mid field.

That was back when we square wheels

Well they don’t punt past mid field anymore down south. Very rare. FG kickers can hit from 60+ with ease. Not so much in the CFL.

I don’t think teams will go for it “all the time” but I think anything less than 3rd and 5 from the 30-40 yd line will see significantly more gambles vs the ping pong FG battle we see today.

Oh well, not quite better late than never, but imagine if they had shit-canned the old forum BEFORE announcing the changing of the rules, and waiting on the latter AFTER the end of the season?

In retrospect given as quiet at things are now, I am going to reconsider my view and do think that timing would have been better and that such timing would have been with less fuss too, except probably on places like Reddit and X like usual there anyway.

They likely wanted the feedback and if i have my facts correct, then they now want to block tv ratings from being published. What are they worried about?

I found it interesting that the CFL put up a post on X earlier today highlighting the top 10 special teams plays of 2025.

Three of the highlights were missed field goals which were returned for touchdowns.

At some point the CFL took the post down.

Could it be the Commish doesn’t want to highlight one of the most exciting plays that will become almost non-existent with his new rules and field changes?

Can we expect a top seven of ten list or a new fake news list?

The NFL has turned it around with their new kick off rules, they aren’t putting it through the end zone and we’ve seen a few kick off TDs this year. We might not see wide FGs returned in the CFL but we could see short ones returned. Only ONE wide FG returned for a TD last season - Vaval in Winnipeg

Latest comments on the rule changes from Commissioner Gordon. I didn’t and don’t believe for one second that the rules were changed to Americanize the game. He expressed surprise that this has become such a big conspiracy theory.

People want to be outraged, I guess.

The CFL doesn’t need to change the kickoff rules but they will have to if they shorten the field.

Plus there were at least three missed field goals returned for TD as per my original post. And I have no idea how many missed field goals occurred that were run out for long gains that got the crowd on their feet. I can almost guarantee there will be nowhere near the amount of short field goal attempts returned as wide this year.

One thing is for sure, there will be no wide returns with the new rules.

I still can’t believe not one person thought making the field 100 yards could be thought of as Americanizing the game.

Also, where are all these surveys and stats they used to justify the changes?

Oh well, it looks like they did not consult you or others here feeling the same either.
