That’s what I was concerned with when the competition committee got involved. Too many voices, hard to get a concessus and then you get goofy compromises.
To the board’s credit they never decided how the last 3 minutes per half was going to run but now we get 2 different play clocks at the different times of the game.
That’s great for attracting new fans!…. sarcasm detection
I get the feeling that it might have been too much all at once with no play testing. Especially given with how the playoffs transpired in the last 3 min of each game, the recency bias makes it hard to justify changing that part of the game.
I still feel like it will eventually change, but it might be a 2027 or 2028 thing now.
I recall people asking them right after the rule changes were announced whether the timing rules would include the final 3 minutes of the half and they said they were looking at options because they thought they had the most exciting final 3 minutes so I’m glad it looks like they’re keeping it.
College and NFL also have different timing rules at the end of their halves so I don’t think it’s an issue to have different rules depending on the time left on the clock.
Roughly In keeping with other major leagues, should be only 4 teams. Because so few teams, it should be a round robin playoffs.
For OT, each teams gets possesion on their own goal line and see who makes it the furthest down the field, no punting. If they both score TDs, then do it again with one less player on offense. Not too often they both score TDs I think.
So goofy and artificial. Yay! Our team came back in the dying minutes (no mention of the gifted mini time outs between plays). Might as well give them automatic first downs if they come close to the line to gain to save them the trouble of having to do a QB dive. Hate this 3 minute rule at the end of each half. Win on your own merit!
Ya preserving the 3 minute ruleset seems like a huge walk-back.
The game doesn’t need 2 jarringly different timing regimes. That 35 second clock will add the pace and play-count to make up for getting rid of the silly timeout after every play we get in the last 3 minutes. Furthermore, we won’t have urgency between plays since the play clock blowing in goes back to the refs who will make sure everyone is happy and comfortable before we are ready to play.
They chickened out because they assessed their fanbase unable to understand that they were in for more football at a quicker overall pace with a 35 second automatic play clock throughout.
I haven’t been vocally opposed to the rule changes but Johnston sounds like he’s full of bullshit in this article. I’d bet alot of money they have next to zero data review for plays 2 decades ago. They’re pulling figures out of their ass.
Expanding the number of teams in the league And expanding the number of games in the current playoffs. Some don’t seem to like any team needing to play just one game to reach the GC. That’s one point of view. Another is they had to play 18 games to reduce it to one.
Now they are saying that the sum of all the changes will produce an extra 60 TDs a year. Possible and probably more believable than moving the goal posts alone achieving that.
Sounds like they are going to stick with the last three minutes as is and will step on the refs to manage the game in a timely fashion. League just has to let the teams know what to expect and it won’t be an issue, especially with benches on opposite sides.
