Came down to the goalie on the net for the USA
PLUSS
A few missed open nets by Canada
And the blatant ignored too many men on the ice.
But yes, The golatender in the USA net was a superstar.

McDavid will NEVER be
Generational winners Gretzky,Lemieux or Crosby

McDavid, generational loser

i do wish it was full strength or 4 on 4 OT tho

game pretty much could have gone either way.

The pygmies always get the consolation prizes. Young Celebrini also clenched up in the big game - but you expect that of a 19yr old in his first big international event. McDavid & McKinnon blew more opportunities in this one game than their entire Olympics. Understand they were under immense attack (time pressure) from the Amerks so perhaps thats why they fanned on some shots, and feebled off some atrocious passes (hello Ratso Marchand)

the missed too many men call on usa was bad. i think there were like 7 players on the ice and the puck was there too

Team Canada spent too much time trying to sandbag the Americans on Sid’s injury. Obviously, it was very serious - a joke they were flying rumours Sid was 70% for today! Should have spent more time coaching up egotistical superstars like McDavid (who barfed up the puck on USA’s golden goal) and some feeble back-checking from so-called NHL superstars. The CBC shills (panel & Mikey Johnson) were calling this the greatest game ever played. I think not. Way too many basic mistakes - and massive skill-set letdowns by the big shooters (McDavid, McKinnon, Doughty)

The Americans did not play a great game either. Other than Helleybuyck producing one of his classic performances. Thought Marchand, Stone & Parayko looked a bit vulnerable.

Yes 7 USA players on and 2 refs and 2 linemen missed it.

Easy to point the finger at McDavid. Yes he was wearing the C. He missed a breakaway in the first.

But there were others who I thought could/should have the spotlight on them.

Toews - open net.

MacKinnon - open net

Makar and Toews allowing Boldly to split them and score USA’s first goal.

Makar in OT. Gambled at trying to get the puck in USA end only to miss and ultimately allowing USA to head the other way on a 2-1 and the rest is history.

As for Marchand and Stone. For me they are done as members of Team :canada: . Too slow to keep up with the best on best.

Contribution by those two today was minimal at best.

McDavid must be feeling pretty cursed. In the last two years he has lost in 2 Stanley Cup Finals and an Olympic Gold Medal game.

I’ve watched the OT goal by the USA now several times in order to break down what happened.

There were two glaring mistakes by Team Canada. The first was Cale Makar’s failed attempt to try and keep the puck in the USA zone. At best it was a 50/50 chance but he seriously misjudged his chances at winning that puck. The bigger problem was that he was the only D-Man on the ice. An ideal situation for the States to have a 3-on-1 odd man rush, since the only man back for Canada was a Forward, that being McKinnon.

However, McKinnon still had a chance to make a play to prevent the goal. He seemed to be a bit hesitant on that play as if he wasn’t exactly sure what to do. I think a proper defenseman would have broken up that play.

Canada arguably had the 3 best players in the world on the ice for that goal against. If you can’t win with McDavid, McKinnon, and Makar on the ice, then perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be.

Having said all that, Canada will ultimately be haunted by their own missed opportunities to bury the States. Overtime should not have even been needed.

I have not watched allot of Avalanche games. After watching him play as well as Hughes during the Olymics, hard to argue this point.

Allot of talk on Makar being a great dman. Not so sure about that based on his play during the Olympics.

i think Makar is more like a complimentary piece in a way - he’s an incredible finisher and plays a more classically defenceman-style positional game, even though he jumps up a lot. Hughes is like the ultimate rover - while not quite as good of a finisher as Makar, Hughes is clearly the better play driver and backend quarterback; he has the puck on his stick more than any other player and it’s very noticeable. totally splitting hairs tho. because they are both so good (along with Werenski and Hudson), but they play very different styles too. Makar is more physically engaging as a defenseman, but Hughes appears to affect the flow of play and possession a lot more when he’s on the ice, and his edgework skating is absolutely ridiculous - he’s literally a human breakout machine too.

I did not see much of that from Makar during the Olympics. His style of play reminds me of Paul Coffey.

yea i would agree he wasn’t super noticeable during the olympics, but he did score a nice goal against USA.

i guess that sums up the difference in how i see Makar vs Hughes right now. i don’t notice Makar all that much then he’ll make an unreal play and score a great goal. every time Hughes is on the ice i notice him doing stuff in all three zones and he has the puck most of the time driving play and setting up teammates. it’s like Hughes needs to play defence a lot less than Makar because he ensures his team has the puck more than the opposition when he is on the ice.

Hellebuck was outstanding
We had so many chances, 42 shots, 1 goal

Binnington was okay, he made the stops he should have made. his best one was the glove save on Hughes. but he also let in two goals that seemed much less difficult than many of the saves that Hellebuyck made. the missed open net opportunities hurt - have to bury those against a good goalie.

canada’s defense on the first goal was horrendous and Binnington couldn’t make the save. meanwhile, Hellebuyck stopped breakaways. that paddle save in desperation was sick.
