2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics :olympics:

US Women have looked great so far. Can’t wait for the men’s tourney to start!

They had a great 3rd period. I think they were only up 1-0 after two.

All things Winter Olympics here!

Prolly right - vis a vis the goal-tending (or lack thereof). Canadian snipers usually have problems against stellar NHL goal-tending. Wait til they find guys all hepped up to STOP CANADA.

Our trio of goalers is very good by NHL standards but all of them have shown cracks in their armour. Too often for my liking.

Canada overwhelming favorite to take home a men’s hockey medal. Gold? Not so much!

USA has a mystery meat in net (Helleybuyck) who’s having a rather dank season in Winnipeg. Suspect Team USA tall foreheads will switch him out if they see easy ones sieving past him. Remember, a red hot Helleybuyck was pretty much the only reason the Jets one the President’s Choice trophy last season and made playoffs last 2 or 3 seasons.

Side angle: This year - Jets will be fortunate to nab a Top 5 dude in the draft. But they don’t want #1. They’d have to pick Gavin McKenna and with his recent criminal troubles, Jets like their draftees crystal clean. Even with charges withdrawn, Jets mgmt. will assume there’s a stink on McKenna. Fortunately, the Jets will rally down the stretch and while definitely finishing off the playoff line - they’ll prolly pick somewhere between #6 and #11

Groaners galore to Canadian mixed doubles entry Peterman & Gallant. They just dropped their 4th straight to run themselves out of playoff hopes. When CBC starts talking mathematical possibilities you know your run is over. Problem with Peterman/Gallant is they’re both front-enders. Gallant is one of the greatest second players in canadian curling history. Peterman a very solid second in Manitoba curling. Neither have skip senses. But they earned the right to rep Canada by knocking off all comers.

We shall see there Nasty.

Good mix of younger and elder statesman on this club with the golden goal Crosby leading the way. Coming off the 4 Nations win, like Canada’s chances as much as any other country.

we have an :olympics: emoji now :olympics:

unfortunately because the olympic logo is quite wide it turns up quite small as a square emoji.

Our mixed doubles curlers are on quite the slide. Looking bleak now.

And after 5 losses in a row they’re done.

Shocking result actually but then again it’s not a given we medal in curling anymore.

Do not believe Canada has done well at mixed doubles. I could be wrong.

Lawes and Morris won gold

Homan and Morris lost in the playoffs

Gallant and Peterman missed the playoffs

Many Other countries dedicate more time and resources to the mixed doubles than we do.

We crown our Olympians and then they spend the majority of their time focused on the 4 person game.

If Canada is serious about this some more change is needed.

Also, if the ice stays the way it is (insanely straight) I expect similar results for Team Jacobs. Not sure about Homan , she could play well on straight ice but I’m not 100% all in on that take.

Early round battle between Team USA vs. Team Canada in women’s hockey a bit later today. (Tuesday, Feb 10)

Even prior to the Poulin injury Team USA has been bullying the Canucks around like there’s no tomorrow. One then might expect USA to bombard our Canadian ladies to the ends of time this afternoon. Not so fast - the absence of Poulin should motivate each and every surviving member of the TeamCan roster to put in their all-time best effort.

I said Team Can was overwhelming favorites for silver in Cortina. Not changing my designation but if they can’t measure up to the Americans today and Poulin is ruled out for further play then I’m only calling them slight favorites for silver. Poulin is the heart ‘n soul, even if she’s begun her descent into old age - she’s still head ‘n shoulders our best player.

USA has a bunch of hi-end players and none appear to be on career declines. Canada’s goal-tenders will prolly have to serve up wall of fame like performances to topple the mighty USA girls.

Again, without Poulin, Canada features too many pad-thumpers and near-scorers. No real natural scorers and in many cases they won’t be able to keep pace with American speed.

But if they step up today - they won’t be thrashed 7-0 or 8-1 like many predict. However, with superior efforts they could hold it to a 5-3 or 4-2 American win. Just don’t see Canada coming out with more than 2 goals today.
