Rider Free Agents 2026

Two AJs and two CJs. Must be a mess in the locker room! No wonder they all get secret nicknames

Will post another updated list end of January.

Apparently Ouellette is having ankle surgery in Febuary. Not sure how serious that is. Also Marcus Major Jr was just drafted by the UFL. So was Reid. Not sure what that means to us. Does the CFL have any agreements in place with them?

Food for thought.

PS you guys. If you can find it give a listen to Piffles Podcast January 15th. Half hour with Dohnte Meyers. What a likable young man he is and wish him all the best going forward.

PSS:  Kyle Hergel signed a futures deal with Chicago. Wonder if this guy ever makes it into a Riders lineup? Would be a heck of a grab!

Where did you hear about the ankle?

Trevor Reid? Did he play in 2025 or 2024?

Reid was 2024. Played the whole year at LT as a rookie. He’s a gem. Heard about AJ on the Sportscage i think. Might have been Green Zone as i tend to list to that stuff while i’m trying to sleep lol.

Also heard that Hergel might be on his way here. That sounds like a bust since he just signed a futures contract. Landing this draft pick would be a big big deal.

So we inked Michael Hughes, the backup punter we brought in mid season. Well done.

Now to open an old wound. Lauther is still dealing with a back injury. This really reminds me of how we blew the last season regarding Fajardo. Instead of six gaming him we had him play hurt. Hurt him. Hurt the club. Lauther wasn’t right all season. Should have been six gamed a couple times then had him finish up with a ring. Thankfully we didn’t need to take any long FG attemps in the playoffs and thankfully that miss in the GC didn’t cost us.

It’s definitely time for a new plan

I’ve discussed this quite a bit with some of my Rider friends.

Hughes played well during his limited opportunity for the Riders.

Went 2/2 on PATs and made both his field goal attempts, one from 28 yards and another from 42 yards.

As for kickoffs, he averaged 76 yards across 3 attempts (74,64,90). That 90-yarder demonstrated just how strong his leg is and was also his first rouge!

He is an American specialist, which is rare in the CFL, but other teams have rolled with Americans in those key positions (Leone & Castillo).

Finally, he’s only 24 years old. Regardless of whether Lauther returns for another year or not, he’s 35/36. I know it isn’t old for a kicker with guys like Whyte and Paredes kicking into their 40s, but I don’t hate a succession plan.

Lauther had a shaky year but was also dealing with some pretty serious back issues as mentioned above. I know it’s easy to write Lauther off because of his rough stretch over the last 2 seasons, but I do really think he is a good kicker who has fallen on some hard times.

Saw this interesting exchange on twitter regarding Lauthers bonus and the charity hockey game earlier;

I think if Lauther wants to return, you bring both kickers into camp for preseason, and the job is up for grabs.

Super helpful insight. I’d love to see what the new kid can do with a season. And I’d love to see lauther get another good year in.

Depends on his back healing?

And his confidence

He mentions that he didn’t even really practice the last 3 months of the season and is looking to be kicking again next month in this article

They will pay the bonus and both will be in camp. Since Lauther hasn’t practiced in six months i wonder how he will look. Suspect he’ll be as good as his back is.

Brammer signed! Yup yup yup! The next week will be interesting. Think we still have at least a dozen or more players in the top ten of the position groups.

The elephant in the room is in the QB room. I thind we need Jake to secure first if Harris goes down for any amount of time. First matters in the playoffs. But Coan needs reps. How do we manage that? What i saw in the Wpg game was a guy with no time to throw. Wonder how he’d look with a bit of protection?

And a bunch of missing defenders

Yeh this week better start being a crazy busy one for signings. Now that they know the cap increases by a measly 220,000 they know what they have to work with. The 'ā€œlegalā€ Ed Hervey season startes pretty soon.

Couple more impressive signing from down south. QB and another DL. Looks like we are picking up some insurance.
